Boomkat Product Review:
Sandy Smith presents Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells played by 28 brass players and a lone synthesiser, breaking down to the bright and cheery fanfare of the A-side Introduction and three corresponding, concise B-side parts.
The Introduction is a novel case of emulating synth voices the bloody hard way, essentially diffracting the classic lead line between a tight knit mass of gleaming brass who evidently handle the pomp with aplomb. The other parts are alternately urgent, as with the marching swagger of Basses, then flighty and a little eastern-tinged with Jazz, and winding up like some Disney soundtrack pish with Fast Guitars.
There’s a apparently a full-length album to accompany this 7”, if you really want to follow that line…
