Boomkat Product Review:
Mark Van Hoen's creative work as Locust seems to have been in a state of dormancy since 2001's Touch release Wrong, but thanks to this digital issue of his 1995 LP Truth Is Born Of Arguments, we get to revisit some of his classic material. The heavy digital treatments collide with deliberately emotive song titles, blending icily precise beat designs and luscious electronic orchestrations. Pieces like 'The Optimist' reveal a keen ear for the cinematic, experimenting with bold arrangements and off-kilter Eastern harmonies while the impact of distorted drum samples crashing into vocal treatments on 'Saturated Love' brings to mind Bjork's work from the same sort of period. Although nearly 14 years have passed since it first surfaced, Truth Is Born Of Arguments still sounds like a relevant listen, anticipating the kind of experimental production techniques that would characterise electronic music's near future.
