Boomkat Product Review:
Most of us know NYC-based artist C Spencer Yeh best as the deranged mind behind seminal noise outfit Burning Star Core, but like the Transformers there’s more to him than meets the eye, as ‘Translations’ appears willing to expose. This is no mere noise experiment, far from it in fact as it’s Spencer’s attempt at a ‘proper’ pop album, and while he mercilessly gets it wrong, this is exactly why you need to listen. There’s plenty of people who’ll be very quick to chalk ‘Transitions’ up as an attempt to ‘make it’, but for us the album sounds more like deranged outsider pop in the mode of Daniel Johnston or more recently Ariel Pink. Through cracking MIDI sounds, deadpan vocals and paper-thin drum machine rhythms we are exposed to an artist who isn’t afraid to look in the mirror and reveal exactly what he sees, and that’s as rare as it is important to respect. Keep it real.
