Boomkat Product Review:
Radian guitarist Stefan Németh and Florian Kmet make up occassional outfit Lokai based in their home city, Vienna. They've only met once before on record for 2005's '7 Million' album and return with a new set for Thrill Jockey, recorded in a home studio with a setup of Rhodes piano, guitar, electronics, melodica, violin and percussive found-sounds taken from the flat's heating system. The result is an intuitive blend of organic and synthetic sounds, irretrievably woven into the atmosphere with a relaxed, or loose order that lends their music an endearing quality. 'Panarea' swells with natural progressions, introducing each element with unpredictable timing to form an immense soundscape before dissipating just as easily to the silence of their flat, leaving the listener almost in the grip of a live performance. '4am' reflects the ambience it's time signature implies with gamalan-like bells, keys and deep blue harmonics while 'Glimmer' sounds like one of the pair is making a brew and inspired the other to respond with a flourish of guitar. It's intimate and comfortingly quiet music for fans of Lucio Capece, Tape or Radian.
