Total Blue
Los Angeles-based trio Total Blue capture Michael Mann's neon-drenched vision of the city on their debut album, stirring reverberant soft-rock with new age-y Fourth World textures and breezy downbeats. RIYL Tangerine Dream's 'Risky Business' OST.
Nicky Benedek (aka Benedek), Alex Talan and Anthony Calonico have been making music together for over a decade, but Total Blue is their debut as a three-piece. They decided to draw a line in the sand, embracing a mood instead of attempting to write music in a specific manner, studying the Los Angeles skyline and replicating it musically with digital synths, an Akai EVI wind synthesizer, a fretless bass and a guitar. And the sound isn't completely unexpected, slipping neatly between West Coat new age and vivid, gated soft rock - a vision of LA through Michael Mann's rose-tinted spectacles. The band's use of the wind synth is particularly effective, giving the music a lush, organic personality, but how much fretless bass you can handle will depend on yr own tolerance, innit.
