Boomkat Product Review:
Still probably best known under his Ninja Tune pseudonym Animals On Wheels, Andrew Coleman has been releasing finely crafted electronica under his own name ever since Thrill Jockey put out Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt. For this latest album (named after the 1970s skateboarding legend) Coleman focuses in on the details of electronic music production, ending up with a collection of impressively intricate tracks which draw as much from recorded sounds and acoustic instruments as much as they do from any conventional digital sound palette. Dose One shows up for some leftfield MC work on the glitch-hop of 'Not A Speculation', but otherwise this is an all instrumental album consisting of elements as diverse as the freetime piano and field recording duet 'Rain And Dogs' and the impossibly contoured, deep, languid bass of 'Elegant Operation', which is a real joy to the ears. An eminently skilled producer, Coleman delivers some impressive work on Tony Alva's Hair (wow that's a weird sentence). This is very much modern, beat-driven electronica done as it should be.
