Boomkat Product Review:
Exploratory percussionist Jon Mueller takes us back to source with an intensely hypnotic and mind-bending side of drums and ceremonial Tongues resembling some kind of life-affirming ayahuasca trip deep in the jungle.
Mueller proceeds from the keening, spacious dimensions of Inverted Touch with Duane Pitre into much denser, driven zones across two extended pieces, both relentless in their momentum and progressively layered construction, with the seemingly possessed Cory Allen employing extended breathing techniques learned in the Amazon to ratchet the already intense, monotone drumming into a disciplined but febrile frenzy of rhythm and tone.
Harmonium, tampura (a long-necked Indian string instrument) and sarangi (a short necked Indian string instrument, played thru a piano (used as a sort of resonator) add to the mix, making a deep viscous drone that wraps around the voice and drum pattern in a way that, if we’re honest, is possibly only manageable by hardened psychonauts or those of a steelier disposition; for anyone this could be a psychotomimetic danger, likely to trigger some kind of St. Vitus Dance syndrome or equivalent in the recipient, and f**k knows where that could lead you…
Approach with caution and due respect for due rewards - highly recommended!
