Boomkat Product Review:
The Knife continues its 20th anniversary celebration as the duo of Karin and Olof Dreijer announces the first-ever vinyl pressing of their work Tomorrow, In A Year.
After laying down some of the c.21st’ finest pop albums, The Knife took their 5th studio album as opportunity to show off their Proper Artist credentials. Written in collaboration with US composer Mt. Sims and UK avant-pop artist Planningtorock, The Knife took on ’Tomorrow, In A Year’ as a commission to create a studio version of Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma’s opera based on Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species.’
In this context, they largely swapped signature hooks and pop immediacy for operatic vocals and grander staging of their synths with, and let’s no beat around the bush, fairly missable results. There’s a nice slice of supple, colourful minimal techno recalling Oni Ayhun’s work in the album’s single ‘Seeds’, and in the Fever Ray-esque ‘The Height of Summer’ but aside from that it’s one for opera lovers, proper, or diehard fans of The Knife.
