Amazing (as you'd guess) new EP from our favourite thoughtful rockers, Yo La Tengo. Six tracks, 'Today Is The Day', 'Styles Of The Times', Outsmartener', Bert Jansch's 'Needle Of Death', Dr. Crash' and 'Cherry Chapstick (Live)'. Taken from the superb 'Summer Sun' full length 'Today...' is the perfect summer angst track, think Sonic Youth fused with the recent Ms.John Soda gem. 'Styles...' feels like classic slacker grunge, a slightly more hopeful Dinosaur Jr with optimistic guitar droneage. 'Outsmarter' continues to rock out but has an added twist with killer avant jazzer William Parker somewhere deep in the mix wigging out on double-reed horn. 'Needle Of Death' perversely let's the sunshine in over Jansch's anti-drug classic. 'Dr. Crash' injects some surf-rock vibrations, strictly Yo La style. Finally the live reciting of 'Cherry Chapstick' from the previous album is as beautiful as Georgia, Ira & James get - pure driftsome lushness. Ace Ornette Coleman 'Tomorrow Is The Question' inspired sleeve, the title of this 'EP' seems linked to one of Ornette's masterpieces though I can't quite see the connection. Ney'mind it still comes as highly recommended, we love the Tengo!
