Boomkat Product Review:
I know it might be a controversial opinion but for me, 'TNT' is THE Tortoise album. Yeah I know the earlier records are 'cooler' to reference, and yeah I know they're absolutely stunning too, but 'TNT' just does it all. Almost universally derided when it came out in 1998 (I remember, it was shocking.) it very quickly became like a family member to me, I would listen to it repeatedly, totally entranced by the quirky combination of jazz, rock and experimental electronics. Okay so some levelled that it was too 'light' and had lost the Kraut-rock intensity of previous records, but it's a record that I think takes time to truly appreciate and hearing it now it sounds better than it ever has. 'TNT' is like a fine wine, and each year for me it becomes just that little bit more classic, standing as not only a perfect representation of one of post rock's most influential bands but also a representation of the scene itself. With one of the most memorable sleeves of the 90s (don't tell me you haven't seen it before?) it features such unsurpassed tracks as 'Swung from the Gutters', 'I Set My Face to the Hillside' and 'The Suspension Bridge at Iguazu Falls' - all of them combining everything that the band do best. Don't believe the haters, this is classic music and about as indispensable an album as we sell on Boomkat - you need it in your collection people!
