Boomkat Product Review:
A fresh collaboration Lunice and Scottish eccentric Hudson Mohawke, TNGHT might just be a match made in heaven. This debut EP explores the duo’s fascination with the current crop of electrically charged rap doing the rounds at the moment, and somehow manages to do it far more authentically than you might think. From the outside it might seem like musical tourism, but the two capture the starkness and claustrophobia inherent in some of the genre’s biggest crossover hits and inject a healthy dose of their own personality to twist things up just a little bit. You might have noticed EP highlight ‘Bugg’n’ on XV’s smoked-out ‘Popular Culture’ mixtape, and the instrumental stands just as tall as its rap-laced counterpart. Elsewhere the duo give a sly nod to classic hardcore production tics on ‘Higher Ground’, offsetting a grubby sampled vocal with the kind of bombastic brass you’d more likely expect to have slammed in your gob on a Ruff Ryders comp than on a Warp EP. Well timed and with enough low-end to sink a luxury yacht, TNGHT show you don’t need to come from Atlanta or Houston to hit where it hurts. Killer!
