Boomkat Product Review:
Originally dropping on a sickeningly difficult to obtain cassette a few short years ago, ‘Time Began in a Garden’ is one of the finest of Dominick Fernow’s ‘rare’ releases, and also one of his most peaceful. Inhabiting the same nauseating ambient space as Hospital co-conspirator Kevin Drumm, Fernow takes the ‘Imperial Distortion/Horizon’ template and garnishes it with heaving environmental recordings, half-heard guitar and barely-audible vocals. There are times when the wavering sound almost transforms into a lullaby, drawing you in with hinted-at fragments of melody and harmony before spewing out a calcified froth of white noise. Dominick Fernow has already proved himself to be one of noise music’s most varied practitioners, and ‘Time Began in a Garden’ shows yet another side to his production. Miss it at your peril.
