Tim Key. With a String Quartet. on a Boat.
Don't be put off by the tag "comedy album", this fine piece of work comes from the entirely excellent Tim Key: performance poet, contributor to Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe/Newswipe, and co-writer/star of gameshow We Need Answers and the criminally not-yet-recommissioned sketch show, Cowards. This album finds Key reciting his poetry and other writings in real-time collaboration with a string quartet's musical accompaniment, aboard a boat. These unorthodox poems are always subject to digressions and distractions, and this bizarre format seems to further complicate matters - the whole affair is riddled with asides, conversations and bouts of bickering with his co-performers, but that's all part of the joy of the record. The album is an hour long and was apparently laid down in around seventy-five minutes, so there's a rawness and spontaneity that makes it feel like a very lavishly produced podcast. Genuinely funny and with lots of replay value, Tim Key. With A String Quartet. On A Boat. comes highly recommended.
