Boomkat Product Review:
Remarkable 2nd album of dirge pop and dissonant outsider goth from Damon McMahon aka Amen Dunes. 'Through Donkey Jaw' arrives roughly a year since the lo-fi improvisations of his 'Murder Dull Mind' EP built upon the morbidly obsessed sound of his debut 'DIA' for Locust in 2009, but both of those records were actually recorded around 2006 and he's made a great step forward, in production values at least, with his latest. Rather than just bleak, there's a more subtle ambiguity to these songs, deploying an expanded inventory of synths and studio trickery over backwater string picking to drag his classic sense of dystopia right up to date without sounding overly conceited or losing any of his genuine creepiness. The label say this is his "Summer" to the "Winter" of his last two records, and you'd have to agree, in comparison, but rather than just another moody bloke with a guitar and some clever songs, the layers of synths are woven so naturally into the fabric of his songs that they don't feel cloyingly retro, and make his depression feel poignantly refreshing. Highly Recommended.
