An exquisite new age ambient chamber rarity surfaces on vinyl for first time, shining an overdue spotlight on the thwarted 1982 debut by Tim Story - a noted collaborator with Roedelius and er, Glenn Close! RIYL Brian Eno, Dominique Lawalrée, Harold Budd
Swan-diving back to the start of Story’s oeuvre, back in a basement bedroom in Whitehouse, Ohio, ‘Threads’ documents the quiet emergence of a crucial, if unsung, figure coaxing gorgeous fragile melodies from an odds an ends set-up including his mother’s spinet piano and a PAiA synth kit built by his girlfriend’s father, plus a Yamaha CS-30 and pawn shop Les paul, and salvaged vibraphone. He would send the results to for release with Klaus Schulze to no luck, but a french label Atem offered to issue the album on their new sublabel, Labyrinthes. However the label folded soon after and only a handful of impossible-to-find test pressings remain.
Thankfully Dais now rectify the situation with a full fledged vinyl edition of this gorgeous album, taking in the sylvan nugget of ‘The Moors’, which would end up on the seminal ‘Nightlands’ comp in 1987 alongside gems from Pump and Muslimgauze, along with the rarified, Harold Budd-liek air of ‘Burst’, the glowing tones of ‘A Thousand Whispers’, and the kind of blissed pastoralism in ‘Scene & Artefact’ that would see him come to work on six release with Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and produce ‘Qua’, the 2009 comeback album by Cluster.
