Thorn Valley
Moin, Tara Clerkin Trio, Roxane Metayer, TRjj, Pat Benjamin, Valentina Magaletti and many more are snaffled in World of Echo's butterfly net for a lovely 4th year anniversary DIY survey.
Hoxton-based label and record shop World of Echo have emerged as a vital part of the DIY music landscape during their years in operation since 2018. The label delivered one of 2021’s sweetest delicacies with Tara Clerkin Trio’s ‘In Spring’, and now the ‘Thorn Valley’ compilation sees them follow rhizomatic lines of thought across the contemporary fields between experimental chamber music, indie scuzz, lysergic and jazz-related forms with a smartly border-oblivious approach and canny programming that feels like a personal mixtape.
Naturally we’re attracted to the jagged post-hardcore grist of Moin’s ‘Toots’, with the Raime lads chopping silvery flashes of guitar and samples on Valentina’s pugilistic percussion, while she also lends a solo highlight in the smoky, serpentine sidewind of ‘Low Delights’, and recent favourites Tara Clerkin Trio enchant with slyding string pitches and bloozy piano coaxed into the gorgeous hush of ‘Castelfields.’ Stroom’s Köln co-op TRjj also keep it lowlit with ‘Collectivizor’, and Still House Plants can be relied upon for the taut ace ‘Thinking About Appearances’, recalling Klein jamming with Mica Levi’s Good Bad Happy Sad.
We're also introduced to a raft of acts who are new to us, at least. Tara Clerkin Trio associate Pat Benjamin bookends the set with piquant bouquets of solo piano; Berlin’s Nein Rodere plucks the sublimely awkward chamber strokes of ‘Projection Check’; Exek and Able Noise have us by a thread with their brands of exquisite, detuned wooze; Blue Chemises’ Mark Gomes twirls the sparkling ambient gem ‘Orbiting Ganymede’; and Siltbreeze alum C.I.A. Debutante hit it right between the eyes of German Shepherds and Gray in ‘Slow Navigator’.
