Boomkat Product Review:
Following up on the brilliant, darkly mysterious Hungry Ghosts! These Songs Are Doors album, released between Not Not Fun and Digitalis, This Is Folk Music finds Mudboy's haunted lo-fi melodies making a very welcome return, honing in on sinister organ motifs, 'Suspiria'-like chime patterns and discordant electronic polkas. Some of the most intriguing music here sounds rather like the sort of fare you'd find on an old library record: 'Dawn Treader' is a bewitching piece of synthetic mustiness, drawing on digitised chimes, faux-strings and that trademark creepy organ sound. Equally immersed in lo-fi atmospherics is the soft undulation of 'Solitron Waves' (not to be confused with the track before, which is confusingly titled 'Solitron Wave') whose ramshackle electronics paint Mudboy as a fourtrack-bound La Monte Young. Sort of. Lovely stuff.
