thirteen sense
Genius blistered shoegaze-haze from one-off iconoclast Klein, fully leaning into her fearless guitar era with the thrashing motherload of ‘thirteen sense’, billowing pitch-black industrial fumes with slashed amp riffs and spongy, dubbed-out NWOBHM drums - huge tip if yr into MBV, Mica Levi, Sonny Sharrock, Duma, Dreamcrusher.
Continuing her pursuit of a noisy dragon that prompted her AOTY ‘Marked’ in 2024, Klein upends buckets of expressively free-formed scuzz on a super strong follow-up distinguished by a more melancholic thrust wreathed in reverberating, barbed distortion. Yet again, she leaves prissier operators for dust with outré levels of guess-again shred and bursts of rotted drum machines loosely linked to the ecstasies of BM and shoegaze as much as free jazz, psych-rock and her regular gospel touchstones.
Klein gets ever deeper into her thing, alchemizing sonic extremes with suppressed euphoria. FM ambience and hat-tips to Soundcloud rap and R&B make for something like a more radical answer to the short-lived blackgaze sound, conjuring images of a funereal procession clad in sequins. And so, we go from Jandek-cum-Darkthrone improvisations to drowned out dissociated blast beats and gusty, boss-tune whines, into crunky feedback and Eno-esque exhilaration; jazzy electric piano, redlining fuzz and doom-y gospel organ vamps.
Klein's fingerprint is always unmistakable - just peep the half-speed trap trills that underpin her soaring Marshall stack elations on 'hard 2 kill VOL 2' or the messy collage of indistinct voices and bells that offsets the furious, posturing moves on closer 'blood on the flag' and you'll know what we’re saying. It's so fucking good - a high vs. lo cultural bloodbath of the most exhilarating order.
