Boomkat Product Review:
Whatever happened to Math Rock? It seemed to fall out of favour almost as quickly as it had sprung up, with Chicago based Tortoise affiliates quickly distancing themselves from it, and Don Caballero left to pick up the pieces. More recently though, with Battles now everyone's new favourite band, it seems to be almost trendy to change time signature every bar and play music that no one else can even attempt to imitate, so The Ladies have taken it one step further. The band is made up of Zach Hill, the unique and uber-technical band leader of math rock's finest Hella, and Rob Crow, the frontman of indie darlings Pinback. What we end up with here then is quite an odd combination, on one side the avant experimental leaning of Hill, who takes up duties on the percussion, and then in front we have Crow, wailing over the top like Weezer on steroids. This isn't quite as bad as it might sound but the mixture is definitely jarring, I can't help but wonder that an instrumental version of 'The Mean Us' might have been a good idea.
