Boomkat Product Review:
If this sounds a bit like Tunng, it's not without good reason. The Accidental is a new band started up by Tunng vocalist Sam Genders with Stephen Cracknell of The Memory Band, Hannah Caughlin of the Fence Collective, and freshly signed Polydor artist Liam Bailey. The band opt for a slightly more organic, unadorned aesthetic than the archetypal folktronica you'd hear Genders coming out with for his day job, with a raw, harmonized approach to vocals, acoustic guitars, strings, harps and dulcimers taking up most of the songs, occasionally joined by a line in percussion that sounds uncannily like someone banging coconut shells together. The album proves to be incredibly charming, especially if you're comfortable with Genders' unaffected baritone vocals. If there is a criticism to level at There Were Wolves it's that upon a first spin no really great songs make themselves apparent - but there's plenty here to draw you back for more listens to uncover the finer points.
