Boomkat Product Review:
'There to Here' might only be the debut album from bassist Joe Lally but he's been an active member of the music scene for some time, having played bass for Fugazi since their inception in 1987. I guess I don't need to over emphasize then that Fugazi's Ian Mackaye makes an appearance (and recorded the record.) along with a whole bunch of other famed collaborators. that would be too obvious now wouldn't it? The style on offer at first might sound like well carved indie, but listen carefully and you realise that there's no guitar, instead of switching to a six stringed beast Lally has instead stuck to his guns and played bass across the entire record giving 'There to Here' a thoroughly strange sound. Like labelmates 'The Evens' the stark, empty sound gives the songs a rich character and allows them to breathe in a world where all too often indie music is pushed into overproduction and pomp. A surprisingly mellow listen that retains all the garage rawk character you'd hope from a Fugazi-related project, 'There to Here' is another reason not to forget about Dischord, they're still holding it down for us!
