Boomkat Product Review:
Ponytail offers up some far out Finnish weirdness, but this time around it's not in the sort of rickety, lo-fi fashion dictated by the Fonal brigade. Instead, Helsinki resident Samuli Tanner makes jazzy, rhythmically adventurous electronica, with an emphasis on warped hip hop beats and shapeshifting samples. The format of Themes For Cops is a single, continuous mix of different ideas and sub-compositions, all rendered in a glossy, jumbled up digital hodgepodge of the highest order, never lingering on a single idea for too long. Apparently, Tanner is one half of the dubstep outfit Clouds, and Ponytail is his more experimental outlet. In truth you could certainly envisage fans of Rustie and Flying Lotus enjoying these skewed, but brilliantly produced beatscapes.
