Boomkat Product Review:
Canadian rap stalwart Josh Martinez returns with a fifth album of tongue-in-cheek alt. hop, fusing a variety of different pop genres that don't necessarily seem very compatible with one another: the backing track to 'Ritalin Future Sounds' is a bit of a '50s rock & roll throwback, dangerously recalling that Black Eyed Peas song that samples Dick Dale (a good 12 years after any such behaviour might have been even faintly acceptable). Far more impressive is 'Underground Pop' whose production style falls in line with some anonymous mid-nineties Euro hit. Oddly, Martinez thrives as much under these conditions as he does on the mock blues of 'Beerhungry Lovestory' or the hooky slow jam 'Absinth Minded'. He approaches it all with a sense of humour and an ear for working melody into his verses. Stylistically, The World Famous Sex Buffet does seem to be all over the place, but perhaps this hunger to branch out is best explained by 'All Rapped Out', in which Martinez expresses a weariness with his craft. Tellingly, it's the opening track.
