The Witches Of Venice
This is very interesting, a beautiful collaboration between famed childrens author Beni Montresor and musical behemoth Philip Glass. The two have come up with an operatic rendition of Montresor’s children’s book ‘The Witches of Venice’ and the results are as you might expect - incredible. Packaged as a deluxe and gorgeously illustrated book with an accompanying cd containing the soundtrack, the album at times veers towards the operatic (come on, it is an opera after all) but for me it always holds back far enough from descending into parody. Glass’s now token synthesized chimes are blended with voices to tell a fantastical fairytale, and as the album progresses it all makes perfect sense. Glass, like Nyman has always retained that fairytale element to his work which has surely endeared him to film producers, and here he unchains his restraints and goes all out in creating a world of make-believe and magic. If you have a soft spot for Glass and fancy seeing how his music fits with this fabulous story then you should explore without delay.
