Boomkat Product Review:
Bandleader and bass player Riaan Vosloo is the creative driving force behind fusion ensemble Examples Of Twelves. The band situate themselves between the more swinging outposts reached by coffee table favourites Cinematic Orchestra and the kind of drifting almost-ambience of some of Arve Henriksen's compositions. There's a nod toward more abstract techniques, with synthesizer flourishes and often rather heavy-sounding beats, with mushy, compressed cymbals filling the mixes with colour, but it's the interplay between the horns and keyboard textures that defines the album, establishing a sense of melodic drama in the early 'movements' (no individual track titles here kids) and a more pensive, contemporary classical influence creeping into certain sequences of the mid-to-late sections. While the title might suggest a Bruce Hornsby-related nightmare, The Way Things Are makes for a compelling melting pot of genre boundaries. Good stuff.
