Boomkat Product Review:
Those horror movie buffs among you will no doubt already know the story about Coil and the Hellraiser score – but let me refresh your memory anyway. Esteemed experimentalists Coil were asked to produce a soundtrack to the 80s Hellraiser movie, but when it was submitted, as so often happens, it was rejected in favour of a more ‘traditional’ treatment. Turns out it’s happened again, as Raz Mesinai (he of Sub Dub fame) composed a score for a recent Hellraiser sequel only to have it rejected in a similar manner. ‘The Unspeakable’ is the result of Mesinai’s toils, and indeed should interest anyone who gets wide-eyed at the promise of a new Goblin or Fabio Frizzi re-issue. The sub-heavy dub treatments of Mesinai’s previous work is nowhere to be heard, and instead we get a fairly revenant collection of compositions that weave in abstract vocals, orchestral swoops and demonic electronics. Good stuff, and it remains disappointing that a soundtrack like this is deemed too ‘out there’ for, well, "ordinary" folk.
