Boomkat Product Review:
Coming off the back of Seventeen Seconds, Faith And Pornography, The Top had a lot to live up to and most people hate it - but it's perhaps the weirdest and, in places, most oddly fun album of this early 80's run of releases. Also, it has 'Dressing Up' on it, top 5 The Cure tune right?
In some ways you could argue The Top is the most quietly infliuential album from a band that’s full of them, this one steering into weird pop and bleary eyed madness without any effort. Except for Bananafishbones, which is just plain irritating, it’s wall to wall brilliance, from the slow baseline grind of Shake Dog Shake to the breezy Flamencofied 'Bird Mad Girl’, aggy screamer 'Give Me It’ and then just pure bawl-out pop brilliance on 'The Caterpillar’, 'Piggy In The Mirror’ and, best of all, the aforementioned 'Dressing Up’, quite likely the best synthetic pan flute tune of all time.
