Boomkat Product Review:
An engaging and surprisingly straight-forward rock album from Scandinavian noise band Skull Defekts. The edit for this version of the release is the same as the CD, which differs from that released on the limited vinyl version, and the tracks here are primed for hard-riffing immediacy - something demonstrated by opening cut 'Knives, Birds, Stones & Pyramids', which takes the form of a taut three-minuter combining stoner sludge metal, Sonic Youth-style slacker free-rock... and bongos. Following on, 'Waving' kicks off like a weird, gothic Hawkwind and 'Six Sixes' kicks into some tribal drone-based activity - something expanded on by the self-explanatory 'Unholy Drums For Psychedelic Africa'. After the energised, Magik Markers-like punk of 'Habit' the band settle into some more sedate and experimental material for the last two tracks: 'Skull & Tongue' is another percussion-fueled workout while 'Urban Ritual' drifts off into a formless, atmospheric noise exploration worthy of Wolf Eyes.
