Disappointed with the sound they were making in their bedroom studio, acoustic duo Kristian Garrard and Luke Bergman (aka The Thousands) decided to take an unusual route in the recording of their debut LP, they took it outside. Yep screw your fancy field recordings; these guys actually recorded the whole album in the great outdoors, giving it a strange but beautiful resonance, especially given the music itself. Comparisons will no doubt be made to Simon and Garfunkel or recent folk favourites Fleet Foxes, but 'The Sound of Everything' is somehow more naïve and more innocent than that. The peculiarly expansive sound of the recording enhances these deeply subtle songs - there is little more than guitar and vocals, but the addition of fresh air gives the record the je ne sais quoi it needs to sound more than the sum of its parts. A refreshing and disarmingly beautiful addition to a usually crowded and self-serving genre - well done lads. Recommended.
