Boomkat Product Review:
Kill Rock Stars are more than just a reliable label, they seem to snap up half of the world's best indie music only to have it snapped up by some other allegedly bigger label and then spoiled. Poor fellers, if only the bands would stay with KRS they'd probably end up being cool for ever, like Deerhoof. yeah Deerhoof are an example of a band who are doing it right - now don't go signing to a major please! Mary Timoni is an old hand in indie music, having cut her teeth playing in Helium and Autoclave, and now we see her making her Kill Rock Stars debut and in keeping with her underground indie-goddess status, it's rather ace. Kicking off the record with a hit is always a bonus, and on 'The Shapes We Make' Miss Timoni insists instantly that she's rather ace by giving us the singalong indie-pop bliss of 'Sharpshooter'. Okay so this might be grounded in 90s indie music (as is most of the record) but that's what is so great about it, at no time does Timoni appear to be jumping on a bandwagon or another, rather she's done her time fighting the battle for other people and is happy to do her own thing, whether we like it or not. Luckily I like it a lot, and with each and every track she reminds me of the glory days of indie-rock music. This might be an album with a very American slant, but it's also an album which references good quality American music, giving it a hazy nostalgic quality which is impossible to criticise. Each song here feels like a sing-along classic and accompanied by a more than able band, and given the instruments and studio she needs Timoni has come up with a rather spiffing record and yet another killer addition to the world of Kill Rock Stars. Jump right in if you want to hear some indie-rock music that isn't going to make your skin crawl - Mary Timoni just want you to feel loved.
