Boomkat Product Review:
Back in stock. Housed in a cd case which resembles an old Puffin book, 'The Seven Sleepers Den' is the debut solo release from Richard James, better known as the guitarist from Welsh avant-popsters Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. It was only last week when we had a release from fellow Gorky Euros Childs, but I can tell you James manages to eclipse his bandmember totally with this highly enjoyable record. Beginning with a short section of organ music recorded in a Cathedral, the album very quickly launches into Welsh folk music - that is, contemporary sounding wyrd folk music with Welsh lyrics. Most of the songs here revert to English, so we're back to your common and garden nu-folk, with occasional forays into much more upbeat territory (most notably on the psychey noisefest 'Wanna See You Die'). 'The Seven Sleepers Den' is an unusual and startling record, and it's nice to see some of the Gorky's boys doing what they do best - loveable weirdness.
