Boomkat Product Review:
This new five-song, 30 minute mini album by folk-punk balladeers Two Gallants is designed to tide you over until their next full-length proper which is due this Autumn, but it actually turns out to be a rather ideal package in its own right. The density and narrative-heavy tendencies of the group mean there's often a lot to take in for a single sitting, so The Scenery Of Farewell seems ideally proportioned to these ears. Opener 'Seems Like Home To Me' takes a few pointers from Saddle Creek head boy Conor oberst with its emo-country vibes. The instrumentation of the track is judged just right, with droning fiddle, bashed-in drums and a smattering of old west piano. 'All Your Faithless Loyalties' starts off like it might be something from Springsteen's Nebraska LP with its dramatic acoustic chords and biting harmonica. The final 8 minute long 'Linger On' is perhaps the most subdued of all the songs here, taking the country ballad route in the most traditional sense, layering on the strings with just enough subtlety to avoid sounding in anyway overblown. Excellent.
