Boomkat Product Review:
Finally available in the UK after a number of license offers were turned down by the band, this is the debut offering from Rob Campanella's (who is probably best known for producing the Brian Jonestown Massacre) The Quarter After. Joined by his brother Dominic, drummer Nelson Bragg (who is also a member of Brian Wilson's band) and Victor Penalosa on bass it probably won't shock you to hear that the band revel in making jangly happy-go-lucky pop music, much in the same vein as the aforementioned Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Beach Boys or the Beatles. This can't be a bad thing though, it's better surely than another tiresome 'angular post-punk/no-wave' record filled with haircuts, attitude and trendy vintage teeshirts, these guys clearly just want to make good quality, old fashioned pop music, and I can tell you with a straight face that they do it damn well. 'Always Returning' sounds like The Kinks at their best, giving all that sun-loving summertime festivals 'n picnics vibe we all seem to love, and the album's closer 'Everything Again' sounds almost as if Merseybeat never fell out of fashion. The British invasion obviously took its toll on these guys, and who can blame them? They just want to enjoy the ride.
