The Processes And Instruments Of Normal People
Timely reminder of Zen Zsigo’s bleakly affective ambient-industrial comfort blanket for the colder months, in a new remaster by Opal Tapes Stephen Bishop.
A distinguished product of England’s contemporary post-industrial complex, Zen Zsigo has charted a cherished path thru the fissures of experimental noise and ambient for over a decade as Cremation Lily, and other aliases on his Hastings-based Strange Rules label, as well as part of many other groups, notably the Anglo-Saxon power electronics duo Æþel Electronics. His 2017/2020 album ‘The Processes And Instruments Of Normal People’ as Cremation Lily is testament to Zsigo’s most sensitive side, evoking a certain eldritch pastoral English atmosphere from tape-processed synth and organic acoustic piano and strings.
It’s a real introspective one for the loners and lovers. Six parts of washed out textural inference, thrumming pulses, field recordings and radiant spatial dynamic that say it without saying it in a way that eludes many other operators in this zone. There are certain aesthetic parallels in AFX’s SAW 85-92, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement and aspects of Helm at his quietest, even the romance of Global Communications, but all bleached out with a tone of his own that makes it a classic in this particular vein.
