James Rutledge is the multi-talented mind behind a ruck of celebrated projects, from his downbeat Pedro alias, to his various remix works for everyone from Fever Ray to The Rakes. His latest brainchild is the mathy Krautrock duo Vowels, debuting here on mini-indie megapower, LOAF records. Together with drummer Chris Walmsley he's concocted a rhythmically complex and cosmically charged sound with ears focussed for the future. The tumbling time signatures and intensely wired mesh of guitars on 2-minute epic 'Sonny' give a shocking first taste of the group, before 'Two Wires' settles down into an uplifting krautrock workout, piling on dischordant synths, motorik drums and stray bleeps reminsicent of Holy Fuck. The sweltering distortion of 'Swim Pool' could be considered as a concentrated version of Earth jamming with Emeralds, while 'Appendix' returns to tightly controlled drumming with abstracted electronics reminding of Sun-ra. Rhythm fiends will also get a massive kick out of 'Drums Gone Awry' too, sounding like Chris Corsano in a limbre mode.
