Boomkat Product Review:
Grouped in with the same stable of New York bands that birthed Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts et al, The Pains Of Being Pure Of Heart are so focused on riding the crest of the zeitgeist they seem to be unaware of how precariously close they are to sounding like the Gigolo Aunts. OK, so that's a little bit severe, but a song like 'This Love Is Fucking Right!' is one part Jesus And Mary Chain, one part The Cure and two parts the theme tune to Game On. More impressively, 'Come Saturday' lays on the '80s echo-fuzz production to hold aloft a song that's very much reminiscent of early Belle & Sebastian. Even though these guys are merely the latest in a long, long line of bands who've emerged with a JAMC-aping sound, they still manage to do enough to distinguish themselves from the pack, writing tuneful C86-influenced songs that are leant a certain amount of backbone by the fizzy, distorted guitars and pounding Bobby Gillespie-style drums.
