Boomkat Product Review:
Shocking outsider synth-pop engagement from Twins, aka Matt Weiner. 'The Other Side' is only the 2nd vinyl release from the prolific Belgian label Ruralfaune (following Dylan Ettinger's acclaimed Digitalis co-prod 'Cutters' on their SYNTH series) and the very first we or most anyone else has heard from this guy. We can tell you precisely jack-squat about him because there's so little info available, but in much the same fashion as the mindblowing Autre Ne Veut LP, the combination of scant background and incredible music proves to be a powerfully seductive blend. With his palette of faded and foisty plastic synths, scarily authentic drums, jangling guitar, wryly affected vocals and woozy melodic chops Twins clearly inhabits that "other" zone which veered off from 1986 into an alternate future where everybody administered their own psychotherapy through electronic pop music. The eleven songs on 'The Other Side Of' retain their bookmarks from classic Factory, 4AD and LTM releases, but their surreal psychedelic proclivities are far more impressionistic; vocals drawled in vaguely familiar styles and melodic arrangements clouded with the mist of memory to sound vividly phantasmagorical. You'll be checking your sh*tty casio to check we're still even in 2010 when experiencing the gunky doom funk of 'Drive By Digital Ghost', the soggy silicone soul dystopia of 'Run Away (From Me)' or the Coil-esque narcotic haze of 'Waiting', while the uncertain emotional message of 'What's Wrong With Me?' will strike a chord with anyone following the sleights of Sam Meringue's multifarious operatives. We can see ourselves spending a LOT more time with this LP. Highly recommended to fans of Outer Limits Recordings, Gary War, or Autre Ne Veut!
