Robin Carolan & Sebastian Gainsborough
The Northman Original Motion Picture Score
Momentous debut collab from erstwhile Tri Angle boss Robin Carolan & Sebastian Gainsborough, furnishing a suitably gloaming, magisterial and strapping soundtrack for Robert Eggers’ Viking epic
Joining their peer The Haxan Cloak (Midsummer) in the ranks of Hollywood sound craftsmen, Carolan & Gainsborough’s first major effort is a frighteningly accomplished and expansive affair accompanying what has been touted as this generation’s answer to ‘Gladiator’. Fitting the brief of Robert Eggers’ follow-up to ‘The Witch’, the Witch House originators draw upon early Nordic folk for a 43-part, 75 minute feature-length soundtrack brimming with widescreen string and horn arrangements and orchestral drums, plus more lambent ætheric parts that faithfully map and reflect the film’s dramatic topography and visceral brutality.
It’s a surprising return to the fray for Carolan, whose writing for the 20jazzfunkgreats blog, and later curation of Tri Angle, was always appreciated over here for bringing together the scene-not-a-scene of VVitch house at the turn of the ’00s-’10s. Finding his foil in longtime accomplice, composer Sebastian Gainsborough (aka Vessel), whose work has increasingly leant towards modern classical and the avant garde in recent years for Erased Tapes, and alongside Manchester Collective co-founder Rakhi Singh, the results are a logical culmination of their shared interests in the occult and the evocative power of musical dramaturgy.
