Boomkat Product Review:
Who knows Arthur Russell’s new wave / power pop band, The Necessaries? Thanks to expert reissue label Be With (Kylie Minogue, Ned Doheny, The Streets) you should have no excuse for being blasé to Event Horizon, one of the very few full LPs that Russell put his name to, here along with Ed Tomney, Randy Gun, Chris Spedding, and Ernie Brooks.
As the cover image and band portrait suggest, there’s a very Americana slant to The Neccessaries’ 2nd album, Event Horizon which cleanly resonates with a lot of the late, great Arthur Russell’s background and music. As you’ll also hear on the galloping bassline of Sahara there’s also a hint of disco in there, too, all very much a product of ‘80s downtown New York, but perhaps shaped with an optimistic, radio-friendly appeal that sounds like they were aiming beyond the city limits.
Little known for the last 35 years, now remastered and cooked up in facsimile fashion, Event Horizon now fills a spot in Arthur Russell collections everywhere.
