Boomkat Product Review:
To say that "The Narcissist" sees a return to form from one of Detroit's most important producers would be a vast understatement. Before you do anything else with this record, head straight for "Mono e Mono" and remind yourself just why the Motor City has left the most awe-inspiring, innovative, soulful mark on the Techno scene since its inception last century and every moment since. Its a filthy, stomach turning beast of a slow, dusty beat caressed by forgotten strings and effortless filters. A track worthy of comparison to Carl Craig's best as 69, a comparisson not made lightly. "In the Meantime" is also supremely inspired, oddly enough bringing to mind some down-paced moments from Luciano's excellent recent album for the same label. There are some airy, jazz-tinged moments scattered throught "The Narcissist", Moodymann-esque summery strolls imbuing the album with a lighter feel. It's not killer all the way, but there are enough sparks of inspiration scattered across these 11 tracks to demand your full attention without any further delay. Excellent.
