Boomkat Product Review:
The Lord Dog Bird is the peculiar adopted moniker of Colin McCann of Jagjaguwar's own Wilderness. This album was recorded during a period of inactivity for the band, but McCann made good use of this downtime, beavering away on these intimate and engaging four-track recordings, sketching out coarse shards of songs not dissimilar to labelmate Bon Iver in terms of their presentation and aesthetic. There's a heavy-going sense of repetition when it comes to the scratchy, droning musical backdrop, but McCann's voice remains clear and boisterous, occasionally bringing to mind the distorted delivery of a Xiu Xiu record. There's some strong writing hidden in these messy, lo-fi passages, and it's great that Jagjaguwar can make room on its books for something so small and seemingly spontaneous when they're also verging on the big-time with bands like Okkervil River.
