Boomkat Product Review:
The Kill Zone is the 2nd 12” taken from Jeff Mills stunning, new, CD-only album, Free Fall Galaxy - one of his best in aeons!
Accompanied by sleeve notes expanding on the abstract, intergalactic concept behind Free Fall Galaxy, this 12” features one cut from the album, The Hunter plus two exclusive pieces.
The Hunter follows starkly motorik impulses into deep space quadrants glittering with distant starlight whilst the shuttle controls chatter in bleeping code. If Suicide went sci-fi?
The other cuts, however, are built for the ‘floor. Asphyxiation wriggles with acid infection on a fine line between panicked bleeps and steady techno groove, whilst The Kill Zone presents one of Mills’ most intricate, non-linear dancefloor tests in some time, weaving from weightless origins thru expansive hyaline harmonics before calving into an urgent acid techno coda tempered from going too fast by its pendulous swing, and blessed with a greater depth of field afforded by post-production enhancements from Steve Kovacs, who has previously worked on a handful of Mills’ albums.
Chuck in a killer cover and you’ve got a straight ACE.
