Boomkat Product Review:
Howard Stelzer has been a mainstay on the Boston experimental scene for many years now, and while in recent years his output might have slowed down it’s nice to hear that the quality is still exemplary. In his first outing for the NNA Tapes label, we find the veteran tape manipulator making a sly nod to Doctor Who, but that’s where the science fiction begins and ends. Stelzer’s music has long been a concoction of stretched, chopped and layered cassette tapes and here we can hear it as it’s pieced together from almost silence, warts and all. An unholy splicing of Ferrari-era concrete sound and blackened contemporary drone, this might be the most ominous package yet from the usually quite positive NNA crew, but that’s hardly a bad thing. Stelzer’s drone is a real flashback to the lesser-heard industrial tapes of the early 80s and ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ should have enough menace to get fans of Raime, The Haxan Cloak and Demdike Stare frothing at the mouth.
