Bruce Gilbert, Kevin Drumm, Various
The Immortal Eye Part 2
Karl O’Connor’s Downwards with a monochromatic special, a limited edition LP featuring exclusive cuts from Wire/Dome legend Bruce Gilbert, Kevin Drumm, Paul Kendall and Russell Haswell, beside Chicago’s Talker, and new recruit Indira Lakshmi aka Lucifer Sky.
‘The Immortal Eye Part 2’ packs intense, deep atonalities, topped by a stunningly uncanny new one from perennial weirdo/genius Bruce Gilbert, whose work (as one half of Dome especially) has cast a long shadow of influence for a good few decades now. On ‘Target Splits’ he triggers unusually vivid sensations using the most utilitarian components - we honestly don’t even really know what you would call this music, but the word seasick comes to mind. Amplifying ghosts in the machine to almost otoacoustic effect, Gilbert evokes that peculiar feeling of not being entirely sure what you’re listening to, how it was made, or if half the sounds are really even there - you know the vibe.
After that emotional miasma, it’s left to Kevin Drumm to slice the mood with a keening cloud of metallic distortion on ‘Nothing Under a Microscope', next to a transition from bombed-out industrial machinery to reverb-heavy synth noise from Paul Kendall, producer to synth-pop and body music royalty Nitzer Ebb & Depeche Mode.
Russell Haswell’s meat-motoring noise techno attack ‘Jarred 90’s Flashback’ could almost be an instrumental offcut from the recent Consumer Electronics album, and Chicago’s Talker follows the route at a slow crawl with the sludgy undertow and over-the-shoulder whispers of ‘Repeat Over’. It’s left to Indira Lakshmi, aka Lucifer Sky’, to end on a v memorable note, contrasting soothing dream-pop signatures with sheer terror on a shifting, raga-like drone. Defo one to keep an ear on.
