Boomkat Product Review:
Fern Jones elbowed her way into music at a very young age, and in playing piano at the bars and clubs she ended up meeting her husband Raymond Jones at a mere 14 years old. By 16 they were married and he had felt the calling of God, so the two embarked on a life of preaching and heavy religion, something maybe not entirely understood by Fern, but she went under the will of her husband and got on with her now neutered life. She suddenly went from being a party girl to being a church girl, and this would undoubtedly have its drawbacks, so eventually she turned her musical hand to writing church songs, or gospel music and blending it with the honky-tonk sound she had grown up playing. Eventually she was taken on by a record label, but the eventual album achieved very little success thanks to the lack of a single. Still now the wonderful Numero label have put together these songs and re-issued them for a new generation to hear, and Fern Jones’ intriguing rockabilly gospel is a joy to behold. This is reverential music, music for praise but it’s also damned enjoyable and peculiarly spiritual. Even if you don’t have a call to to the Lord’s bidding you’re still bound to find something to grab hold of in these utterly lovely recordings. Recommended.
