Boomkat Product Review:
The Girl Suite EP sees multimedia artist Myra Davies in collaboration with Monika label boss Gudrun Gut, working on pieces themed around 'girl culture'. The lead track 'My Friend Sherry' takes cut and paste '60s pop samples as accompaniment to a spoken narrative railing against campaigns to criminalise abortion. Next comes 'Drill' a thumping techno track complete with lyrics that seem to extol the virtues of girls knowing their way around a toolbox. The constant use of the word 'girl' somehow lends a matronly, headmistress type quality to Davies' works, but this has its own quirky charms. After the electropop of 'Love Demo', 'Valkyrie' takes a Gudrun Gut remix of the Wagner piece alluded to in that title and overlays a monologue by Davies. At first it seems absolutely ludicrous, but the 4/4 Ring Cycle antics of the production fit in with the lyrics, which talk about relationships between girls and their horses, which in practice seems far less strange. Recommended.
