The Future Will Come
DFA darlings The Juan Maclean's second album of their fresh proto-house/disco direction with the huge dancefloor hit 'Happy House' and followup 'The Simple Life'.
The latter opens up 'The Future Will Come' with a smart Italo styled groover, before the Talking Heads inspired title track drops the tempo. The supremely camp 'One Day' is another highlight of the album, bringing back a flavour of 80's NRG strings with killer vox from Nancy Whang. Flirting with another early house trope, 'No Time' wires up a soggy 303 acid line to fey vox from Mr Maclean, who turns far darker on the melodramtatic album climax on 'Human Disaster' with an emotionally broken performance given gravitas by symphonic strings and a lonely piano reminiscent of Antony.
The album finishes on a high point though the inescapable pianos of 'Happy House', leaving you with that feeling that it's all going to be just fine in the end. A thoroughly satisfying listen for any card carrying, badge wearing followers of cool.
