Chicago's crossover jazz duo, multi-instrumentalists Charles Rumback and Charles Gorczynski aka Colorlist, head up the latest release from boutique imprint Serein. On 'The Fastest Way To The Ocean' Rumback plays percussion, bells and melodica, while Gorczynski plays saxophone, numerous woodwind instruments, synthesizers and harmonium alongside Jeff Parker of Tortoise on 'Nine Lives' while Liz Payne lends vocals and melodica to the closing track. Combined, they make for an immersive, at times ethereal, and wholly nutricious neo-jazz fest. The centrepiece of the record is 'Nine Lives', an expansive, ten-minute composition weaving Rumback, Gorczynski and Parker into an exhilarating dialogue of repetitious phrases building with intensity until an epic, stirring resolution is found. On the B-side, 'Coming Into Sight' is more restrained, pastoral and solemn, before the record closes with a beautiful vocal from Liz Payne on the tender folk-jazz of 'What We Have Left'. A lovely record, limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.
