Boomkat Product Review:
Also known for his work within his band The Slip, Brad Barr releases this album as a showcase for his formidable and highly individualistic talents as a solo acoustic guitarist. Thankfully The Fall Apartment never runs into danger of going through the motions as a Takoma-ite or a ragtime obsessive. The Fall Apartment features an abundance of leftfield gems - not least a brilliant cover of Nirvana's 'Heart Shaped Box', which is reimagined as a skeleton delta blues stomp. There are a number of covers present on this disc in fact, including a spirited interpretation of Cuban musician Ernesto Lecuona's 'Maria La O', which finds Barr in especially fine voice, not overly concerned with excessively high tempo right-hand workouts as so many of his contemporaries seem to be, instead focussing on the expressive detail and poise of his performance. of course, this wouldn't be a solo guitar record if he didn't shred a little bit, and there's plenty of complexity and technical prowess on show through 'Bouba's Bounce', 'Gin Gin' and 'Newst Flurries', the latter of which brushes with Al Di Meola levels of rampant virtuosity. Brilliant.
