Boomkat Product Review:
Lone Wolf is the newly adopted alias of songwriter Paul Marshall, and this new album follows up the cult success of his 2007 album, Vultures (released under his own name). The name change is presumably some sort of diversionary tactic - an attempt to draw attention away from the fact that he is that most unfashionable of species: the male, acoustic guitar wielding singer-songwriter. What's more, Marshall is a particularly traditionalist exponent of his art, not resorting to trendy, flash-in-the-pan production techniques nor any excessively rustic, cabin-in-the-woods Bon Iver tactics. It seems to be the case, however, that the straighter Marshall plays it, the more successful his music is. 'We Could Use Your Blood' is an especially good example of this: based around steel-strung acoustic guitar passages, only the lightest brass and tuned percussion adornments interfere with the recording's spine-tingling solo feel. First single, 'Keep Your Eyes On The Road' has more of a full band feel, but once again, it's all about the relationship between Marshall's voice and the song. Of the more fully stuffed arrangements, the string-enhanced 'Russian Winter' and the horn-coated 'This Is War' prove most effective, stirring up an atmosphere of emotive intensity that resonates with Marshall's confessional presence rather than obscures it.
